This is actually a redo/reimagining of a painting I did many years ago. In the original version (also titled “Deathweaver”), I made her kind of a menacing, stereotypically evil “black widow” kind of character, but I was never really satisfied with that idea. Since I did the original version a long time ago when my painting and anatomy skills weren’t as good, I decided I wanted to repaint her, but this time, I completely reimagined her character: instead of an evil black widow, a predator looking for prey, this version is more like a Fate from Greek mythology. With the threads of her web, she weaves each person’s death—the time, the manner, the place—but she takes no pleasure in it. This is her responsibility, something she must do (because all things that live must eventually die) but she weeps for the end of every life as she weaves it. She carefully weaves the threads, connecting them all in a delicate pattern of death—and then she grieves the life her work just brought to a close.
