This is the frontispiece illustration from Kim Headlee’s novel King Arthur’s Sister in Washington’s Court. It was written to be a “sequel” to Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, and Headlee (who’s writing style is every bit as clever and entertaining as Twain’s) wanted her book to feature black and white illustrations in a similar style to the original Connecticut Yankee illustrations by Daniel Beard.

The book’s main character is Morgan Le Fey, who like the main character in Twain’s novel, travels through time—but in Morgan’s case, she travels forward to the year 2079, and ends up in America’s capital, Washington, DC.

I very much enjoyed bringing Morgan—and her experiences in the USA in 2079—to life. This frontispiece features Morgan approaching a mortally-wounded King Arthur in her own time in the 6th Century (though the shadowy figure in the background is…kind of important).
